I was 18 and about to leave for college, completely unmoored — that in-between feeling where you've left one life and haven't landed in the next. Then Living in Clip came out and I was hooked. Ani's voice on those live recordings was raw and unguarded and totally unafraid, singing about anger and tenderness and contradiction like they could all live in the same woman without apology. It cracked something open in me. She handed me permission to stop borrowing everyone else's idea of who I was supposed to be. Through her I came into my own femininity on my own terms, and I found a voice I hadn't realized was missing — one that could finally say the things I'd been swallowing. Meeting her would afford me the opportunity to say thank you to the person whose honesty taught me my own. That's why I entered.
